Why we do it….

Posted by servinginlove on December 21, 2007

DarroughWe received this from one of the teachers involved in our mentoring and tutoring at Darrough. It really explains a lot. It is a phone call from a 12 year old to a Houston radio station (KSBJ FM 89.3) They found it so profound it is posted on their website. It’s short, just click and listen.

Popcorn and a Movie for the Homeless

Posted by servinginlove on December 7, 2007

There is unity in diversity and we are not all the same.  But somehow we all fit into a larger picture.  We are quick to see differences in people, status and purpose, but we sometimes forget that we are here together for a reason.    So let’s celebrate differences and find ways to be together.

Your Serving In Love (SIL) Team has partnered with the Kokomo Rescue Mission to provide popcorn, soda,  and a movie on a weekly basis this winter.  The people who work at and take shelter at the facility will be treated to a big screen movie with a faith-based theme and all the trimmings.

We will publish a schedule and invite YOU to stop in and become part of the community serving homeless and disavantaged people in Kokomo.  It is a wonderful season to reconsider your talents and calling to see if you might be able to find a place to serve with this outreach.

This summer, SIL has plans to bring back Drive-in movies to the Kokomo area as a random act of kindness.  It is a new area for our popcorn ministry and we are excited about how this will  grow.

After all…..It’s not about us

Wrapping up another year

Posted by servinginlove on December 5, 2007

Once again this year your SIL Team will be at K-Mart to provide FREE gift wrapping to anyone. We will be there Fridays and Saturdays beginning December 14th.  So when you shop this season be sure to let us help by wrapping those presents for you.

On December 15th at 7 pm, Morning Star Church (MSC) will present our annual Christmas musical.  You will want to make plans to be there.  An encore performance will be presented Sunday December 16th at 9:30 am.

We are walking the Darrough neighborhoods to pass information and find out how we can help with snow removal, weather-proofing, and other needs as we create more relationships in more areas of the neighborhood.  See our Community page to see how it works and get in touch if we can help.

In January we will be training local Faith-Based Organizations (FBO) to send more tutors and mentors into the schools. Also we will be collecting teddy bears for our local hospital emergency rooms. Bears

A Party with a PurposeFebruary 3rd will be our 4th Super-Bowl Party for the Mental Health Association.   This year we will invite our hundreds of guests to enjoy the Connection as we have games and pizza while we watch the game.

1500 and Counting

servefest.jpgScroll over to the right and you will see that sometime this week we will have received our 1500th account of an act of kindness sent to SIL by Servant Evangelism outreaches from all over the world.  First we want to thank those who take time to send the descriptions of these acts to us.  You are a source of incredible imagination  and an affirmation of those things we hope for and those things we cannot see — our faith.  Our friends at the Vineyard have categorized these various activities very well.  Here are some links:

Car Washes
Drink Giveaway
Restroom Cleaning
Nursing Homes / Veterans Hospital
Windshield Washing
Newspaper Giveaway
Grocery Bagging
Light bulb Giveaway
Prayer Walking
Seasonal Outreaches

We are encouraged by these acts and we encourage you to act  as well.  1500 have sent us an email to tell us how they are serving others with simple acts of kindness.  Keep them coming and watch the counter…..could we hit 2000 by New Year’s Day?
